Basic Skills, Talents & Knowledge.
How skills work:
Each skill you possess you will have a BASE VALUE & RANKS to equal a TOTAL
SKILL VALUE.
Skills have the following states:
Specialized
Trained
Untrained
Unusable
A Specialized Skill: Can have ranks added to a maximum of two-times the Base Value.
Note: When you first create a character, you have the option to specialize your starting skills. In order to do this you must pay double the Skill point cost. Later in the game, you will have the option to specialize skills as well, but the requirements are more specific (see below).
Starting characters that
specialize a skill start with a base value and 5 free ranks.
A Trained Skill: Can have ranks added to a maximum of one-times the Base Value.
Note: Starting
characters can train skills with their beginning skill points. Skills trained at
the start of the game begin with a base value and zero ranks.
An Untrained Skill: Can not have any ranks added, but can use the skill
based on its base value.
Note: Whatever the base
value is for the skill, and untrained skill only gets 1/2 of that, and cannot be
improved until trained. Once trained the Skill gets 100% of its base value
and can have ranks added to it.
An Unusable Skill: Skills that require you to train them before you will
be able to use them at all.
Skills Base Value:
A combination of 1 or more ability scores that make the base for a skill you want to use. Base value decides how high you will be able to make the skill -- the higher your ability scores get, the higher the base values of all your skills can rise. Untrained skills get 1/2 of the base value, where trained and specialized skills get full base value plus any ranks they have.
Raising Skills: RANKS
You apply Rank Points to skills as you gain levels. You can only apply Rank points to Trained Skills.
Rank Points: There are 2 kinds of Rank points: Power Ranks and Focus Ranks -- (just like there are 2 kinds of skill points.) Using a Power rank on a Power class skill gives you 1 rank. Using a focus rank on a power skill only buys 1/2 of a rank. (and vice versa)
TO GAIN POWER RANK POINTS: Each race has a set number of power ranks they earn each level. In addition, you gain bonus power ranks based on your SECONDARY ABILITY SCORES (Force, Accuracy & Health) See the formula on the attribute page for more details.
TO GAIN FOCUS RANK POINTS: Each race has a set number of focus ranks they earn each level. In addition, you gain bonus focus ranks based on your SECONDARY ABILITY SCORES (Focus, Will & Self) See the formula on the attribute page for more details.
Training New Skills: SKILL PTS
Train new skills using Skill points. Each skill has a skill point cost. You must spend that cost to train the skill.
Skill Points: Skill points come in 2 kinds - Power skill points, and Focus skill points. If you train a power skill with power skill points you pay the skill point cost. If you use Focus skill points on a training a power skill you must pay double the skill cost. In addition, if you do not wish to train new skills, you can convert skill points to Power or Focus ranks - each single skill point you convert translates into 3 ranks of the same type.
TO GAIN POWER SKILL POINTS: Each race has a set number of Power Skill Points they earn each level. In addition, you gain bonus power skill pts based on your SECONDARY ABILITY SCORES (Force, Accuracy & Health) See the formula on the attribute page for more details.
TO GAIN FOCUS SKILL POINTS: Each race has a set number of Focus Skill Points they earn each level. In addition, you gain bonus focus skill pts based on your SECONDARY ABILITY SCORES (Focus, Will & Self) See the formula on the attribute page for more details.
This section shows all the skills -- the next section is called Talents and Knowledge. Talents and Knowledge follow the same rules as skills except for the following differences:
1) Talents and Knowledge MUST be trained to use
2) Talents and Knowledge can not be improved with ranks (and thus cannot be specialized), you either have the ability or you don't.
COMPLETE TALENT/KNOWLEDGE ONLY LIST
Talents and Knowledge are special abilities that you can learn to use, but are not improvable like skills are. Talents and Knowledge adds to your abilities to do specific tasks, once you have the talent or knowledge, it directly affects your abilities or allows you to train other skills or talents.
You use the same skill points to buy talents and knowledge as you do to buy skills, the only difference is once you learn the knowledge or talent you do not need to spend rank points to improve it -- it simply is part of your abilities. NOTE: These abilities allow you to customize your character to model profession types if you desire -- by taking the right talents and knowledge you could feasibly make Paladins, Monks etc...
